Meet Our Ophthalmologists

John B. Fassio, M.D.

Dr. Fassio is a fellowship trained, board certified ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who has special training in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders) with over twenty five years of clinical experience.

He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Utah where he graduated with highest honors in the top 1% of his graduating class (Summa Cam Laude) and received numerous awards including, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma.

He then completed four years of medical school at the University of Louisville, where he graduated in the top 5% of his class, and was again awarded various honors including Alpha Omega Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, the Merck Manual Award, and the Ciba Sophomore Award. 

A one year medical internship was completed at the University of Utah, then a 3 year residency in ophthalmology was completed at the University of Missouri-Colombia and Stanford University. An additional subspecialty fellowship year in advanced cataract and glaucoma surgery was then completed at the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center. He then joined the clinical faculty (Assistant Clinical Professor) at the Moran Eye Center where he was involved with training ophthalmology residents from around the United States including Harvard University. While at the Moran, a study of surgical complications revealed Dr. Fassio having the lowest number of complications of any ophthalmologists performing eye surgeries at the Moran Eye Center.

After 10 years on the Moran faculty, Dr. Fassio started his own Ophthalmology practice, Mountain Valley Eye Institute which has offices in  Park City, Utah and Evanston, Wyoming. Along with his primary focus in providing outstanding surgical outcomes for his patients, he published several articles and has been involved in more than 15 clinical research studies over the last 15 years.

Dr. Fassio provides a wide range of eye care services and enjoys providing basic eye care services in all of his Utah offices. He specializes in advanced cataract surgical procedures and offers a wide variety of lens implant options so patients can be less dependant on glasses. He also has special interest in the medical and laser treatment of glaucoma.

Dr. Fassio is a diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Medical Association and the Utah Ophthalmology Society.

In 2005, Dr. Fassio developed the Physicians Surgical Center in Salt Lake City, which is an eye-specific surgicial center. Dr. Fassio enjoys performing most of his surgical procedures at the Physicians Surgical Center and Evanston Regional Hospital.

Adam Bowman, M.D.

Dr. Bowman is a board certified ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who has special training in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders). He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Brigham Young University, where he maintained a four year academic scholarship and graduated in the top 5% of his class (Magna Cum Laude).

He then completed medical school at the Tulane University School of Medicine, where he maintained a four year academic scholarship and graduated in the top 3% of his class. He received various honors and awards including being a junior year inductee into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Merck Manual award.

He completed a one year internship at LDS Hospital. This was followed by a three year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Virginia Health System. He served as Chief Resident during his final year of physician training where he enjoyed directing care at the comprehensive eye clinic and teaching other residents.

After his residency, Dr. Bowman was in private practice in Davis County for 7 years. During this time, he performed thousands of eye procedures. He has been involved in advocacy efforts including traveling to Washington DC in support of access to health care for senior citizens. He enjoys teaching and has given numerous lectures to Utah’s ophthalmic technicians at their annual meetings.

Dr. Bowman is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Utah Ophthalmology Society. He is an active member of the Utah Medical Association and he currently serves as the President of the Davis County Medical Society.

Dr. Bowman provides a variety of eye care services including cataract surgery, LASIK and PRK, and injections for macular degeneration and retinal disease. He also provides general eye care for glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and dry eye syndrome. He is happy to see patients of all ages and is honored to be working with Dr.’s Fassio and Smith at all of the Mountain Valley Eye Institute offices.

Stacy R. Smith, M.D.

Dr. Stacy Smith is a board certified ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who has special training in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders) who currently practices in Salt Lake City, Park City and Heber City.

She completed her undergraduate degree at Utah State University where she graduated with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude, in her graduating class.

She then completed her medical degree at the University of Utah School of Medicine.  She graduated at the top of her class and was selected to be part of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

She completed a one year medical internship at the University of Utah in a combined internal medicine/ophthalmology program.  She went on to complete a 3 year residency in ophthalmology at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was actively involved in research and published several articles while in training.  She also spent time in Kathmandu, Nepal during her residency and was involved with the Himalayan Cataract Project.

Dr. Smith provides general ophthalmology care and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and dry eyes.  Surgical staff privileges are maintained by Dr. Smith at the Physician Surgical Center, Intermountain Medical Center and Heber Valley Medical Center.

Besides her regular clinical and surgical practice, Dr. Smith is also actively involved in clinical research studies in the areas of glaucoma, dry eyes and meibomitis.

Dr. Smith is a board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology,.  She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Utah Ophthalmology Society.
